Storyline

In Soldier of Fortune, you play as a 'consultant' who is hired by the United States government to do lots of *cough* slightly *cough* un-official military jobs on behalf of them. As the player your job is to hunt down four stolen nukes and then stop the terrorist group that was responsible for the theft of said nukes. And you have to do it before they manage to pull off their 'master plan'. This seemingly impossible mission will take you all over the globe, to locations such as Japan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the US, South Africa, Russia and Siberia.

Sounds a bit like Tomb Raider 2? Here's Kenn Hoekstra's explanation of the huge range of locales: "Along the way, the main character, John Mullins, works with several of his contacts around the globe to find information and foil the master plan." When questions about the depth of the storyline and possible rivalry with Half-Life were brought up, he responded with the notion that "Soldier of Fortune is VERY story intensive and won't disappoint the Half-Life fans." He was quick to add that "In fact, in Half-Life, the player was mostly a bystander in all of the action. In SoF, we drop you right into the middle of everything..."

Technology

Soldier of Fortune is based on a heavily modified version of the Quake II engine. However, unlike Quake II, SoF is hardware acceleration only, specifically for OpenGL cards (with support for other APIs too, like Direct3D, Glide, etc.).

What is possibly the most impressive aspect of Soldier of Fortune is the texturing. The game does what is known as "a second rendering pass", meaning there can be multiple layers to the textures and includes greyscale texturing. If you've got the hardware to do it justice, that this game is certainly going to hit your asthetic taste buds with quite a punch. In most 3D first person shooters, the wall-texturing becomes blurry and out of focus when up close, but if you have extra processor cycles to burn and tune up the rendering, this blurring is eliminated. This sort of technology goes above and beyond anything that was originally in place in Id's engine.

The game will also make use of 3D Sound. The A3D 2.0 and SBLive! 2.0 technologies will be supported by SoF, meaning that the 3D action will be complimented by the 3D sound. The music system will be dynamic and the audio playback will be courtesy of a new compressed audio idea Raven has introduced.

But perhaps the most impressive (even moreso than the texturing), is RavenSoft's new baby, GHOUL.

Multiplayer

What every good 3D action game should have in my opinion. Soldier Of Fortune will include 4 various types of multiplayer modes. Kenn Hoekstra explains:

Deathmatch
Standard DM.

Arsenal
Kill other players with each one of your weapons to get points. After you kill players with your full cycle of weapons (from combat knife through your ultimate weapon you get a point and the player who's the most skilled with all of the weapons in the game wins.

Assassin
Hunt down and kill a specific player while other specific players try to kill you. The higher you kill score, the more players will be assigned to kill you.

Capture the Flag
Standard CTF.
With all of the multiplayer only games coming out, you may be wondering if there are going to be bots include with the game. Unfortunately, bots will most likely not be released with the game, as Keith Fuller explains:

"As far as bots go, I honestly haven't heard anything on that topic so I'm guessing that, at the very least, it's safe to say they won't release with the game. It may sound weird given the number of multiplayer-only games that are flooding the market, but our focus with SoF is a phenomenal, immersive single player experience. I'll tell you this, though... There has been -so- much AI work put into these enemies that I'd be surprised if some bots don't spring out of the code eventually. It wouldn't be that big of a step, IMHO.

Conquer the Bunker:

Conquer the Bunker is a "king of the hill" style game that can be played in teams or as a free-for-all deathmatch extravaganza. In Conquer the Bunker, there is one scoring zone on the map that gives you points for as long as you stay in the scoring zone. The scoring zone is marked with a special "Soldier of Fortune" logo for easy recognition.

Single Player

Bot Deathmatch:

If you really want to hone your S.O.F. deathmatch skills, there's no better practice than a bot-match. For those new to first-person shooters, bots are AI controlled opponents. Soldier of Fortune Gold supports bot play in Standard Free-for-all mode and Arsenal ONLY.

Important Stuff

The Console

There are two ways to enable the console:

First: Use the "Start | Run | Browse" dialogue to locate your SoF.exe file. Add the command line option "+set console 1" . It should look like this (where "Folders" indicates the directory where your game is located):

"C:\Folders\SoF.exe" +set console 1
Click "Run" and you're all set. This way, you can quickly start SoF with the console by selecting the Run menu and picking out the SoF.exe entry from the list. Note: Some versions of Windows clean the Run list out periodically, so it may be more trouble than you're willing to go through.

Second: Make a shortcut to SoF.exe on your desktop if you don't have one already. Right-click the shortcut and go to PROPERTIES. There, click the SHORTCUT tab. In the TARGET box, there should be the directory into which you have SoF installed. Add the command: "+set console 1" to the end of that line. It should read (once again, "Folders" indicates the directory where SoF is located):
"C:\Folders\SoF.exe" +set console 1
Then click the APPLY button to apply the changes.

Once in the game, you may bring down the console by pressing the tilde (~) key, or by pressing ESC at the main menu.
Note: Some non-English keyboard setups will not acknowledge the tilde key for the console. The reason for this is that the actual key bound to the console command is the tick (`), which on English keyboards is actually shifted to type a tilde (~), but which we call the "tilde key" anyway. A note for this note is that it's a tick (also called a "prime"), and not an apostrophe.
